Merry Xmas from the Island of Sodor! on Flickr.

Via Flickr:
Trajan would wish you a Merry Christmas himself but, he’s far too interested in his new train set. 11:30 in the morning and everything else still sits wrapped under the tree!

The Apocalypse Will Be Televised on Flickr.

Via Flickr:
Or, at least it’s prelude. After a 2 hour bus ride from downtown to 5th and Burrard, that only got me as far as Broadway and Granville in any case, I decided to walk home in the storm on Thursday. Luckily, I had my handy, dandy Nikonos V with me. And gloves. Walking only took 1 hour, twice as fast as the bus.

It was quite the day despite the fact that the weather wasn’t ‘weathery’ enough to merit mention on the weather forecast in any other town in Canada. In typical Vancouver fashion, the snow had turned to freezing rain by mid-afternoon and at dinner time, there was hardly any snow left downtown at all.

Some excitement in the ‘burbs though as the Mayan god Chaac warmed up for Friday’s apocalypse by hurtling Ice Bombs at flustered commuters on the newly completed, multi-billion dollar Port Mann Bridge. Say what you will about NDP vs Liberal in BC but, at least the Fast Ferries could float (and continue to do so, somewhere in the middle east).

Introducing Fred on Flickr.

Via Flickr:
Nyana goes way back. The Emperor’s oldest friend, they even had a date on their first Christmas, the first time either of them had seen another kid.

Here she is, introducing her new baby brother Fred, just seven days old at this point. They’re already pretty tight.

Light, who needs it?

Went last month to see Colleen Rennison of No Sinner perform an acoustic set in the lobby of The Rickshaw Theatre, part of their periodic ‘Sir Run-Run’s Tiny Dynasty’ series.

She belted out a set of mostly country classics. The good ones. That’s one hell of a voice she’s got, can definitely see why No Sinner seems to be the latest ‘it’ band around town.

The lighting for the Tiny Dynasty shows is challenging to say the least. My spot meter read ‘E’ taking a reading off of her face. to have some idea if a shot was even possible, I took a reading off my hand, held about 3 feet away from the string of Xmas lights providing the faint glow on stage. Opened up a stop to compensate for my pasty white palm and then 4 more to follow the Inverse Square Law, the lights being about 6’ away from where she’d be standing. That gave me 1/2 second at F/2.0 with ISO 800 so, I bumped the speed up to a useable 1/30th of a second and processed the film at 6400 ISO, figuring that a stop under exposed would give me more chance of having something than handholding at 1/15th.

It worked. barely.

Are we going to fit? on Flickr.

Trajan got quite concerned as to whether we’d make it under the bridge.

On the Aquabus on a day much like today.

The Annex on Flickr.

Lord Roberts Annex, that is. My wife’s elementary school and, barring an unlikely move in the next 4 years, most likely my son’s as well.

I wonder, though, if it will be still protected by a simple chain link fence when he starts in grade one though, given the events of the day and society’s propensity for overreaction.

Oh, how I love living in a jungle of concrete and glass while having this just a 20 minute walk from my front door.

Whaddya mean, nap time is over? on Flickr.

Via Flickr:
Usually, Trajan will let us know when he’s ready to get up from his increasingly rare afternoon naps but, sometimes, he’d rather just sleep. Sunday was one of those days.

I think I’ve got the rangefinder on the Canon 7s properly calibrated, this was 1/8 sec at f/2.0, lit by Vancouver’s typical December gloom filtering in through the window. Nice and sharp too, thanks to the Abrahamsson Softie. Of the 8 or so shots I took before he decided to actually get up, any blur was due to his movement, not mine! If you have a camera with a traditional cable release socket, you should definitely get one!

Trajan’s days in a crib are certainly quite numbered at this point. He hasn’t actually gone over the wall yet but, he’s definitely got the tools.
